Top 3 Benefits of Calcium & Magnesium (From a Chiropractor’s Perspective)

What are the benefits of Calcium magnesium?

Hey Barham family, if you have been visiting our office for a while you probably have heard us talking about CalMag at some point. I may have recommended it to you myself. Calcium and magnesium have tons of benefits, and we wanted to share the 3 most relevant benefits to chiropractic care.

Although getting Calcium and Magnesium from whole foods is ideal, there are times when taking vitamins to supplement your intake could be helpful in speeding up how quickly chiropractic care works for you.

Calcium and Magnesium Supplements Can be Helpful.

Some of the Calmag supplements we recommend are the following:

Calcium & Magnesium Softgels

If you need Calcium and Magnesium and are struggling with sleep issues we recommend:

Top 3 Benefits of Calcium

(From a Chiropractor’s Perspective)

Calcium Supports Bone Strength

This may seem obvious, but as doctors who focus on your bone’s alignment and health, we really value bone strength. Having brittle or weak bones could even disqualify you from receiving chiropractic care. Calcium is especially important for women because they naturally need more with age.

Calcium Helps The Body Transports Nutrients

Most people don’t know this but you need calcium to help move blood and nutrients through blood vessels. This includes hormones and enzymes that impact nearly every function in the body. By making sure your body is transporting nutrients well, we can make sure that you are recovering and becoming healthy as quickly as possible.

Helps Regulate Muscle Contractions

By regulating muscle contractions, your body can make sure that muscles that need to be tense (to have good posture) can work effectively. This can have a subtle but important effect on getting well.

Calcium helps regulate muscle contractions by interacting with magnesium. When nerves are stimulated by muscles, calcium is released. Calcium binds to proteins in muscles, generating a contraction. Magnesium blocks calcium to help muscles relax. When calcium is pumped out of the muscle, the muscle relaxes. This is an important process for muscle function.

(From a Chiropractor’s Perspective)

Magnesium has Anti-Inflammatory Benefits

Magnesium can help reduce inflammation. Reducing inflammation has several general benefits but it can make a big difference with chiropractic because less inflammation can allow the joints to more easily be in alignment.

Reducing inflammation by taking magnesium can also help play a key role in aging and chronic disease.
(1, 2)

One review of 11 studies concluded that magnesium supplements decreased levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation, in people with chronic inflammation.
(3)

Other studies report similar findings, showing that magnesium supplements may reduce CRP and other markers of inflammation, such as interleukin-6.
(4, 5)

Furthermore, some research ties magnesium deficiency to increased oxidative stress, which is related to inflammation.(6)

By reducing inflammation, we can help the body get back in alignment more easily.

Magnesium may Promote Bone Health

Bone health is necessary for chiropractic care.
Magnesium is just as important to bone health as calcium is.
In fact, 50–60% of your body’s magnesium is found in your bones.(7)
Some studies associate lower levels of this mineral with a higher risk of osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become brittle and weak.(8)

A 3-year study in 358 people undergoing hemodialysis — a treatment to help remove waste and water from the blood — showed that those who consumed the least magnesium experienced 3 times more fractures than those with the highest intake.(9)

What’s more, one recent review of 12 studies linked high magnesium intake to increased bone mineral density in the hip and femoral neck, both areas that are susceptible to fracture. (10)

Like Calcium, Magnesium can help promote bone strength which inevitably improves the results you will get from chiropractic care.

Magnesium helps Support Better Sleep

Magnesium supplements are often used as a natural remedy for sleep issues such as insomnia. We recommend it at our Sacramento Chiropractic office, because we sleep is incredibly important to facilitate the bodies natural recovery processes.

Magnesium regulates several neurotransmitters involved in sleep, such as gamma aminobutyric acid. (11)

One review in older adults with insomnia found that magnesium supplements lowered the amount of time it took people to fall asleep by an average of 17 minutes. (12)

Another study in nearly 4,000 adults linked increased intake of this mineral to improvements in sleep quality and duration. (13)

Furthermore, another study associated higher magnesium intake in women with a reduced likelihood of falling asleep during the daytime.n(14)

We hope this short overview of Calmag was helpful.
