Myofascial Release
Sacramento Chiropractor Helps Patients With Myofascial Release
Fascia is a thin, tough connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, bones, nerves, and organs throughout the body. Fascia helps maintain the body's shape and posture, and it allows muscles to glide and move smoothly against each other.
Unfortunately, injuries, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures create Myofascial restrictions that can be painful and reduce range of motion. The Myofascial restrictions produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain-sensitive structures that do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc.)
If you experience muscle pain, tightness, or stiffness after an injury, it may be due to restrictions or adhesions in the fascia, and Myofascial Release may be right for you.
What Is Myofascial Release?
Myofascial release is a manipulative treatment that attempts to release tension in the fascia. The therapy releases the tension by applying direct pressure on the fascial adhesions or by using the active anchor-and-stretch myofascial release techniques.
By finding trigger points (the fascial adhesions) and applying pressure, the chiropractors force the fascia to stretch which allows the muscles and joints to move with more ease.
Our Sacramento Chiropractic Office treats myofascial pain syndromes such as myofascial trigger points or adhesions with manual myofascial therapy and patients usually have fast and long-lasting improvements.
What Are Myofascial Trigger Points?
Myofascial pain syndrome is caused by the development of trigger points within the muscles and fascia. Trigger points are tight knots that develop within the muscle fibers and can occur due to a variety of reasons, including:
Overuse or repetitive motion injuries
Poor posture
Physical or emotional stress
Direct trauma or injury to the muscle
Lack of physical activity or a sedentary lifestyle
Over time, the tight knots in the trigger points can reduce mobility which can cause fascial adhesions. The problem is that, once the fascia is stuck, it is very unlikely to be corrected without an outside force manually releasing it.
Myofascial Pain Syndrome And Symptoms
Fascial adhesions can cause pain, muscle weakness, and restricted mobility. The pain can be sharp or dull and may be felt in the muscle or in surrounding areas. It may also be accompanied by other symptoms, such as:
Stiffness or tightness in the muscles
Tingling or numbness in the affected area
Fatigue or weakness in the muscles
Limited range of motion or flexibility
Headaches or migraines
If left untreated, myofascial pain can worsen and cause chronic pain and even become a disability.
How Do You Perform A Myofascial Release?
To perform a myofascial release, the chiropractors at our Sacramento CA location first have to find the myofascial restrictions using several chiropractic techniques and assessments. After finding the adhesion, the doctors use a number of Myofascial Release Techniques and movement therapies which put pressure on the trigger point. The techniques apply outside force onto the restrictions to manually release the tension and allow a normal range of motion to return to the affected area.
Myofascial Release Helps Plantar Fasciitis And Many Other Conditions
At Barham Chiropractic we have treated several patients with Plantar fasciitis using myofascial release.
Myofascial release can help a range of conditions that can affect various parts of the body. Some of the common conditions Myofascial release can help with include:
Headaches and migraines: These can occur due to trigger points in the neck and shoulder muscles.
TMJ disorders: Trigger points in the muscles of the jaw can cause pain, stiffness, and clicking or popping sounds in the jaw joint.
Fibromyalgia: This condition is characterized by widespread muscle pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbances, and myofascial pain syndromes are often a contributing factor.
Carpal tunnel syndrome: Trigger points in the forearm muscles can compress the median nerve, leading to numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand.
Lower back pain: Trigger points in the lower back muscles can cause pain and stiffness in the lower back, hips, and buttocks.
How Long Does It Take For Myofascial Release To Help?
This may seem shocking to most, but if done correctly myofascial release can often improve your range of motion immediately. We love the reaction of our patients when they have immediate improvements and the best part is that normally the improved mobility is long-lasting. Once the myofascial restrictions are resolved and the joints are aligned the body moves significantly more and with less pain.
