What is a Herniated Disc?

Your spine is made of individual bones separated by pillow-like discs. These discs have a tough exterior with a gel-like center. This allows the spine to move as a stack of joints without the bones grating against each other.

When the disc protrudes from the joint space, we say it is bulging. If this continues, the disc’s exterior may crack, allowing some of the center to squeeze out. We say a spinal disc in this condition is herniated.

A herniated disc doesn’t just cause localized pain; it can throw your entire system out of balance. Your spine is more than just structural support; it’s a crucial communication pathway for the nervous system. Misalignments, bulging, or herniated discs can irritate nearby nerves, creating dysfunction and leading to pain, numbness, or weakness in various parts of your body.

Root Causes of Herniated Discs

Understanding the root causes of herniated discs can be a game-changer in both prevention and treatment. Two of the primary culprits are poor posture and improper biomechanics. The way we hold ourselves throughout the day can have a significant impact on our spinal health.

Imagine your spine as a stack of carefully balanced Jenga blocks. When you stay in one posture for long periods, the body can struggle to hold itself in alignment, slowly nudging those blocks out of alignment. This misalignment places uneven pressure on our spinal discs, potentially weakening the disc’s outer layer and making it more susceptible to herniation.

We often see two common postures in our patients that need to be addressed with corrective care before they cause more damage:

Cervical Kyphosis or Tech Neck:

Spending hours looking down at your phone or sitting all day with rounded shoulders hunching over a computer affects your spine, alignment, and, ultimately, the discs. We see an alarming number of teenagers and young adults with straight necks or reverse curves on X-rays.

Raising your device to the level of your eyes and installing proper workplace ergonomics is helpful. However, if this posture has become your spine’s default, chiropractic care may be necessary to help reverse it.

Lordosis or Swayback:

A pelvic tilt and decreased action of the muscles of the thighs and buttocks can cause the exaggerated curve of a swayback posture. The hip joint may also be restricted and need attention. Because this posture is not natural, it puts more stress on the vertebrae and discs.

Who Is At Risk For Herniated Disc

Our daily activities and career choices can also significantly affect disc health. Some professions are particularly hard on our spines.

Physically demanding jobs like construction workers or movers, for instance. Heavy lifting and twisting motions can strain the back.

However, joints that are not in motion also deteriorate as motion brings nutrition into the joint. Sedentary jobs, office workers, long-haul truck drivers, and frequent flyers maintaining static postures for extended periods are also at risk for disc herniation.

Some careers combine long hours on their feet with the need to lift and twist, putting extra stress on their spinal discs. This includes healthcare workers, first responders, nurses, and caregivers lifting patients and working long shifts. Dentists and hair stylists can also be at risk with their need to maintain postures for extended periods.

Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms of Herniated Discs

It’s far better to be proactive in caring for your spine than reactive when a disc is already herniated.

Early signs include:

  • Numbness or tingling in your extremities
  • Slow muscle reflexes
  • Reduced muscle strength
  • Poor posture
  • Vertebral subluxations
  • Dysfunction in other systems

Pain and discomfort are just one part of your body’s warning systems. Symptoms aren’t just

inconveniences to be ignored or masked; they’re messages that something is out of balance. It is better to have your spine analyzed by a chiropractor for any alignment issues before you deal with major disc problems.

In the case of a herniated disc, pain might not be isolated to your back. You might experience referred symptoms in your arms or legs, reflecting the interconnected nature of your nervous system.

Disc-Safe Reminders

Being aware of your everyday actions can help to reduce undue strain on your discs and lower the risk of herniation.

  • Lift heavy objects with your legs, not your back
  • Avoid sudden twisting movements
  • Pay attention to your posture
  • Improve workplace ergonomics
  • Be mindful of how you move throughout the day
  • Have your spine evaluated by a chiropractor
  • Get regular chiropractic checkups to address postural issues

Natural Approaches to Disc Health

When addressing herniated discs, natural approaches can offer powerful, non-invasive solutions. These methods focus on supporting your body’s innate healing abilities and addressing the root causes of disc problems rather than just masking symptoms.

Chiropractic care stands at the forefront of natural disc health treatments. Think of your spine as a complex highway system, with your nerves as the vehicles carrying crucial information throughout your body. When there’s a traffic jam (or misalignment), it can affect everything farther down the road.

Our team of chiropractors at Barham Chiropractic evaluate your vertebrae and discs with postural analysis, hands-on evaluation, and tools like x-rays where possible.

We use specific spinal adjustments to restore alignment and balance to your spine. This relieves

pressure on affected discs and nerves, potentially reducing pain and improving overall function.

One amazing tool in our toolkit at Barham Chiropractic is spinal decompression therapy. This

non-surgical treatment uses a specialized table to gently stretch and relax the spine, creating millimeters of space in the spinal joints with a gentle pulse. This acts as a gentle vacuum to help reduce bulging discs and draw in nutrient-rich fluids. Many of our patients find this therapy relieves pain and supports long-term disc health along with chiropractic adjustments.

Creating an Environment for Healing

A multi-pronged approach is the most effective way to nurture your spine’s well-being. Our Barham Chiropractic team includes chiropractic assistants, masseuses, nutritionists, and more so that we can support your overall health.

Nutrition plays a surprisingly large role in disc health. An anti-inflammatory diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, colorful fruits and vegetables, and whole grains can help reduce inflammation throughout your body, including around irritated discs and nerves. Some patients find that certain foods, like turmeric or ginger, offer additional anti-inflammatory benefits.

While it may seem counter-intuitive when you feel discomfort, movement is medicine for disc health. While rest is important in the acute phase of a herniated disc, we may recommend exercises for long-term recovery and prevention.

These exercises focus on strengthening the core muscles that support your spine, improving flexibility, and promoting good posture. We will guide you through exercises tailored to your specific condition and fitness level.

Remember, healing a herniated disc is a journey, not a quick fix. By combining these natural approaches, you’re not just addressing the immediate problem – you’re investing in the long-term health of your spine, nurturing your body’s innate capacity for healing and optimal function.
